“Creek Stomping” At Barfield Crescent Park

The Hike

The hike is 1.5 miles round trip on a hilly paved path. You can take wagons and strollers but no bikes or scooters.

Location

Start at Barfield Crescent Wilderness Station parking lot. 401 Volunteer Rd, Murfreesboro, TN 37128. There is a bathroom in the Wilderness Station. Take the paved path. Follow the signs to the River Overlook. There are stairs to take down to the the river.

Play spots

At the River Overlook you can go down some stairs to the West Fork Stones River. There is a nice rocky spot right there to put your things, sit or even picnic. While not technically a creek, the river is a good spot to “creek stomp” most of the year. At times you can see minnows, frogs, tadpoles, crawdads or blue heron. In the heat of the summer at times the river dries up and there are only little pools of water. At this time it is easier to catch crawdads and minnows.

Warning

River levels fluctuate. After lots of rain in the spring the river can be too fast to go into. But most of the year it is not. There is a very small “waterfall” spot that at times can be too rough to play in.
